First Monday Trade
Day - 1916
Ripley, Mississippi
On July 3, 1893, Tippah County
established First Monday Trade Day, a tradition that is still carried on
today south of Ripley. First Monday Trade Day started as a place for
farmers to sell goods to each other, today it is a huge flea market
covering over 50 acres of land. The Flea Market is held the weekend of
the first Monday of every month, hence the name.
The large two story house in the back
of the picture now houses the Tippah County Heritage Society. This
museum displays historical remnants of Tippah County, and provides
information about how life was during the 19th Century, and early 20th
Century.
